With the retirement of former State Senator Tim Golden and former U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss, and the loss of long-time U.S. Representative Jack Kingston, there are some big shoes to fill in Atlanta and Washington. These powerhouses fought relentlessly on behalf of South Georgia, making the growth and development of Valdosta-Lowndes County a top priority, particularly through their support of higher education and Moody Air Force Base.

As we move into 2015, the Chamber anticipates the continued effective efforts of our veteran representatives to maintain our momentum as our newly elected officials begin to contribute to the overall economic health of our area. Looking to the future, the Chamber’s Government Affairs Council (GAC) created the Chamber Campaign Academy, a program designed to prepare local business leaders to provide a pro-business perspective on the local, state and federal levels.

“Through this program, we hope to prepare future leaders to continue to serve our community effectively,” said Campaign Academy Chairman Brad Folsom. “Our goal is to equip local business leaders interested in serving in public office with the tools and information they need to successfully advocate for our community’s interests in hopes that when our current representatives pass the torch, we will continue to have a strong voice at every government level.” 

The GAC hopes the program will help to keep those familiar with the needs of the local business community prepared for open seats in public office.

“We are fortunate to have outstanding leadership at the local, state and federal levels,” said Myrna Ballard, Chamber President. “Our elected officials work hard to ensure that the needs of our business community are met and we continue to grow and thrive. The relationships we have with our representatives make us sure that the needs and concerns of our community are being addressed. We look forward to close partnerships with future leaders as well and will make every effort to help prepare those who wish to serve and improve our community.”

The Chamber Campaign Academy 101 will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 4 from 6-7:30 p.m. It is open to anyone interested in running for political office.
