Press release from the issuing company
Thursday, December 4th, 2014
Mayor John Gayle and Valdosta First Lady Peggy Gayle will officially kick off the holiday season in Valdosta at the annual Christmas Tree Lighting, on Friday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy a special visit from Santa Claus, as he assists with the lighting of the fully-decorated 30-foot Christmas tree located on the front lawn of City Hall, at 216 E. Central Avenue.
Spouses of deployed military personnel are invited to attend as the mayor’s personal guests, as this year’s Christmas Tree Lighting will pay tribute to our local military heros. Event participants are encouraged to sign dozens of greeting cards at the event that will be mailed to deployed military personnel and veterans in time for the Christmas holiday in collaboration with the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes program.
The event will again feature the youth from the Moody Air Force Base Youth Programs, who will provide entertainment with the singing of some holiday favorites. The youth will also exchange holiday ornaments with the mayor and will use their handcrafted ornaments to decorate the tree located inside the City Hall foyer immediately following the tree lighting ceremony.
Hot cocoa, hot apple cider and other light refreshments will be provided by the Valdosta Main Street office at this free community event. Citizens who miss the occasion may watch the recap on Metro Valdosta Channel 17—the city’s government access channel on Mediacom—in December.
