VSU Blazers to Defend Title in 11th Annual Battle of the Blood Donors
Monday, October 6th, 2014
The Valdosta State University Blazers have challenged the University of West Georgia Wolves to another battle of the blood donors. The 11th annual event will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Student Union Ballroom, and the Blazers are determined to continue their five-year winning streak and keep the trophy in President William J. McKinney’s West Hall office.
“It is once again time for the battle of the blood donors,” said McKinney. “Valdosta State University Blazers welcome the opportunity to once again challenge the University of West Georgia Wolves in support of this worthy cause. Let’s go Blazers!”
The American Red Cross has partnered with VSU Student Life for the past 10 years to give all Blazers — students, faculty, staff, and community supporters — the opportunity to give the gift of life and show their school spirit, while competing for the blood drive trophy. VSU won last year’s battle by one pint.
Claire Bowen, account manager for the American Red Cross’s Southern Blood Services Region, Georgia-South District, said that college students play an important role in ensuring that blood is available to patients whenever and wherever it is needed. She said VSU and UWG have both set a goal of 100 points of blood during this year’s challenge.
The American Red Cross is in need of donations of all blood types. O, A, and B negative, as well as O positive, blood types are in particularly high demand.
Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment by calling (800) RED-CROSS or by visiting http://www.redcrossblood.org/donating-blood and entering the sponsor code “vsu.” Walk-ins are also welcome.
