The Valdosta-Lowndes Chamber Ambassadors joined the Valdosta Regional Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Station for its open house and ribbon cutting. Executive Director and Airport Manager Jim Galloway stated, “The new building is bringing a variety of capabilities and equipment it did not have before.” The station is now capable of recharging air systems and washing turn out gear.
The station has two fire trucks on-site made specifically for aircraft needs. The Valdosta Regional Airport contracts with the City of Valdosta to have two trained fire fighters on duty at all times. “We want to show the importance the Valdosta Regional Airport places on safety,” said Galloway. “We are here for our personal safety and the safety of travel.”
The Valdosta Regional Airport was constructed in the early 1940’s as an auxiliary to Moody Air Force Base. In 1946 it became a public airport. The Airport consists of three runways, two of which may be used by current commercial aircraft. Valdosta Regional Airport offers rental office facilities and hangar spaces. The Airport is owned and operated by the Valdosta-Lowndes County Airport Authority, a group of six members appointed by the City and the County. They meet the second Wednesday of every month at 8:00 a.m. in the airport’s conference room. These meetings are open to the public.
The Valdosta Regional Airport is located on 1750 Airport Road and can be reached at (229) 333-1833.
