The South Georgia Military Affairs Council (SGMAC) recently traveled to Washington D.C. in support of Moody AFB and the surrounding region. Council members had a very productive meeting with Assistant Secretary of the Air Force Kathleen Ferguson in regards to the future of the A-10 mission and other potential missions for Moody AFB, like the A-29 and F-35.

Council members also met with the Congressional delegation to discuss the economic needs of the South Georgia region and the impact of Moody AFB on local economies.  The legislatiors acknowledged the base’s strength and voiced support for continuing to keep Moody relevant in the coming years. Ensuring that Moody remains necessary for important missions will serve to protect the base from future BRAC legislations.

“Our meetings served to confirm that our leaders in Washington, D.C. are familiar with our community’s support for Moody AFB. We underscored our willingness to make accommodations for potential new missions and provided letters of support from city, county, and business leaders from each of the represented chambers within our region,” said Michael Lee, SGMAC Co-chairman representing the Valdosta-Lowndes County Chamber. “What we’re hearing from our legislators is that we’re making the right moves, so we will continue to do all we can to prepare our base and our community for any mission that may become available in the future.”

The South Georgia Military Affairs Council is comprised of four area chambers of commerce, including Adel-Cook (Gloria Mitchell, Co-chairman), Lakeland-Lanier (Cindy Pullen, Co-chairman), Nashville-Berrien (Nick Lacey, Co-Chairman), and Valdosta-Lowndes (Michael Lee, Co-chairman). The council serves to protect Moody AFB and the surrounding areas affected by action to the base.
