Staff Report From Valdosta CEO
Thursday, December 5th, 2013
The City of Valdosta was recently recognized by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States and Canada with the Certificate for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Fiscal Year 2011-2012 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR). The certificate is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management. This year marks the 28th consecutive year that the City of Valdosta has received the award.
“Receiving GFOA’s Award for Excellence each year for over a quarter of a century is quite an honor — as it is the highest level of professional acknowledgement within the public finance profession,” said Valdosta City Manager Larry Hanson. “This award is truly a reflection of our Deputy City Manager for Administration Mark Barber and the men and women in the city’s Finance Department. I commend them for continuing to exercise the best practices in government finance and financial reporting.”
The CAFR is judged each year by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program and for demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” that clearly communicates its financial story. Applications are reviewed using standard evaluation criteria that include technical significance, transferability, documentation, originality, cost effectiveness, and finance officer involvement.
