The recent collection of elevation data in flood prone areas of Valdosta is moving the city closer to understanding and providing more accurate information during heavy rain events.

The city is utilizing local firms to collect the data, utilizing the benchmark network that was established as part of the city’s 2010 Stormwater Master Plan update. Field work drawings will be prepared and provided electronically to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to be incorporated into their model.

“The overall intent is to evaluate the 2009 and 2013 floods and determine some possible solutions, and part of that process is to incorporate this elevation data into the model to provide a more accurate representation of current conditions,” said Valdosta Stormwater Manager Emily Davenport.

The Flood Risk Management Study is made possible by a $150,000 partnership with the USACE that began in July 2013 and was scheduled to be completed by November 2013; however, as a result of the recent federal government shutdown, the study will be completed by spring 2014.
