Thursday, October 31st, 2013

James Eutzler, DO, FACOEP, FACEP and Andree Shackelford, RN, FNP-C, MSN, CEN, employees of South Georgia Medical Center’s Occupational & Industrial Medicine Center located at 520 Griffin Avenue have passed the National Registry of Medical Examiners exam and became Department of Transportation Certified Medical Examiners.  Eutzler and Shackelford are part of an elite few who are currently qualified to perform Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) exams under the new federal guidelines.

The new safety rules require healthcare professionals who perform medical examinations for interstate truck and bus drivers to be trained, tested and certified on the specific physical qualifications that affect a driver's ability to safely operate the vehicle. Beginning in May 2014, FMCSA will require that motor carriers and drivers use only those medical examiners whose names are listed on the Agency's National Registry,https://nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov/NRPublicUI/home.seam

“Because occupational and industrial medicine is our specialty, we are fast to adopt new rules and regulations as they pertain to our customers,” explains Dr. Eutzler.  “At the present time, the numbers of healthcare professionals in the region who are DOT Certified Medical Examiners can be counted on one hand.”

Eutzler explained that the primary goal of the Occupational and Industrial Medicine Center is to maintain a healthy and productive workforce. “Truck and bus drivers deserve highly-trained medical examiners that think safety first. My staff and I are committed to doing just that,” he says.

The Occupational and Industrial Medicine Center welcomes new accounts. “All we need is for someone to call 229-249-4010 and make an appointment. Semi-truck parking is on-site for truckers who need to make stops for drug screens and physicals. We also offer treatments for work-related accidents and injuries as well as wellness programs.”

The Center’s hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 7:30AM to 5PM.  For more information, call 229-249-4010 or visit www.sgmc.org/service/occupational_medicine.
