Portion of Williams Street Closed for Improvements and Expansion of Azalea Trail

Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Friday, August 2nd, 2013

On Monday, August 5, the City of Valdosta will begin construction on the Williams Street Improvements Project.  The project, which spans from Ashley Street to Park Avenue, will include the reconstruction of the Williams Street centerline, new curbs and gutters at various locations, minor storm drainage repairs and a new asphalt surface.

The project also features the construction of a 10-foot wide sidewalk that will tie into the existing 2.7 mile Azalea Trail, which currently stretches from the Vallotton Youth Complex to the Craig Center on Gordon Street.  This multi-purpose trail will soon after be extended to Woodrow Wilson Drive, providing additional recreational opportunities and a safe route for citizens traveling to the South Georgia Regional Library.

During the construction, sections of Williams Street will be closed to the traveling public.  Williams Street residents will continue to have access to their properties but are urged to use caution around the construction zones, especially during the extension of existing driveways to the new curb and gutter.  Residents are also advised to locate and mark all sprinkler heads to avoid any damage to their irrigation systems.

Access to the stadium and parking availability near the stadium are not expected to be affected during the upcoming football season, as the construction will have moved past this area.

The construction is expected to take approximately 90 days to complete.  Motorists are urged to adhere to all traffic barricades and construction signs for their safety and the safety of workers.  For more information, contact the city’s Engineering Department at (229) 259-3530.
