Georgia Back to School Tax Holiday Slated for August 9th & 10th

Staff Report

Wednesday, July 17th, 2013

Georgia’s “back to school” sales tax holiday is Aug. 9 and 10. During the tax holiday weekend, many clothing items and computers can be purchased without paying a tax.

Clothing items priced at less than $100 are included in the tax holiday. Items include footwear, athletic uniforms, lab coats and even costumes. Cold weather items are also on the list, from ear muffs to gloves and hats.

But not everything is included. Expect to pay a tax on jewelry, handbags, umbrellas, eyewear, watches and watchbands.

Computers are part of the deal. A single purchase of a computer with a sales price of $1,000 or less can be made without paying tax. Also exempt from taxes are batteries made specifically for computers, cables and adaptors. Items that are taxed, include cellular devices and computer-related accessories designed for recreational use.
