GDOL’s Employment Law and Legislative Update Set for Valdosta Next Week

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler will be a keynote speaker during an Employment Law and Legislative Issues Update Tuesday, July 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Wiregrass Technical College, located at 4089 Val Tech Road in Valdosta.

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) is teaming with the State Employer Committee (SEC) to offer a crash course for forward-thinking human resource (HR) and business professionals looking for ways to handle management challenges. The event, Region 11 South Georgia Business and Employer Summit, will feature a number of guest speakers, including Commissioner Butler; GDOL Employment and Training Consultant Cherry Rizer; employment law legal attorney Jeff Thompson; and Don Betts of Georgia Tech. All speakers are experts in their field and will provide information that can be put to use immediately.

Supervisors, managers, human resource professionals and business owners are encouraged to attend this unique summit designed to help them meet, understand and conquer compliance challenges in the workplace.

Commissioner Butler will provide attendees with an update on local, state and federal legislative issues impacting employers and businesses this year, as well as challenges that could affect them in the next few years. He will also give an update on the Georgia Department of Labor in 2013.

Rizer, who is recognized statewide for assisting employers in resolving unemployment insurance (UI) issues, will offer advice on best practices in UI claims and appeals representation. Thompson, a managing member of Constangy, Brooks and Smith, will speak on “Fighting Through the Storm: Top 10 Things Employers Need to Know.”

Betts will address “Employers Like Me – Sustainable Healthcare Innovations,” and provide information to help non-health related employers establish a new organization called EmployersLikeMe – a peer-to-peer networking group.

Seating will be limited, and pre-registration is encouraged. The cost is $60 per person, and $50 for additional attendees per company. Registration at the door is $75. Attendees can receive 6.0 HRCI recertification credits for attending this program. Registration includes a light breakfast and lunch.
