South Georgia Medical Center offers an extensive choice of community education classes and support groups for area residents. The classes and support groups are free of charge and open to the public. Most are offered at the main campus location. For information on specific programs or classes, contact the individuals listed below.
Smoking Cessation Classes
Classes meet for four consecutive Thursday’s in January (10th-31st) from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Program is offered free of charge; however, registration is required. Please call 229-333-1074 for information including class location.
Women’s Cervical Cancer Screening
An annual event to screen women for cervical cancer (women who have not had a Pap test in the past three years are eligible). To be held January 17, 5:00 to 7:00pm in the Pearlman Cancer Center. To register or for more info, go online at www.sgmc.org/events or call 229-333-1074.
Life with Diabetes Support Group
Group meets monthly on the third Monday of each month at the SGMC Diabetes Management Center at 6 pm. Each program features a speaker and education on living with Diabetes. For more information, call 229-249-4121.
Mended Hearts Support Group
Group meets the first Tuesday of each month in the South Georgia Medical Center Dining Room. The group is open to anyone who has had heart surgery. Dinner is provided. For information or to register, please call Cardiac Rehab at 229-245-6211.
Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group
A combined effort between SGMC and Langdale Place, the Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group meets the 4th Tuesday of every month (except Dec) at Langdale Place. The group assists caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia-related illnesses. Call 229-333-1074 for information.
Pearlman Comprehensive Cancer Center Support Groups
Best Buddies – for Breast Cancer Survivors
Group meets the 4th Tuesday of every month from 6-7:30 pm in the Pearlman Cancer Center Conference Room. Please bring a nutritious snack to share. Registration is not required.
Head & Neck Support Group
Group meets the 2nd Thursday of every month from 2-3:00 pm in the Pearlman Cancer Center Conference Room. This group provides education and support to those who are currently undergoing or who have completed treatment for head or neck cancer. Together We CAN! – Coping with Cancer Together
Meets every 1st Monday of every month from 10-11:00 am in the Pearlman Cancer Center Conference Room. This general support group is open to men or women with any cancer diagnosis. Family members and caregivers are welcome and registration is not required. For more information please call Ellen Woodard, LCSW at 259-4638.
Look Good . . . Feel Better for Ladies
Meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 4-5:30 pm in the Pearlman Cancer Center Conference Room. Join us at a free, hands-on workshop dedicated to helping female cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation cope with and combat appearance-related side effects. CLIMB - Children’s Lives Include Moments of Bravery
Developed by The Children’s Treehouse Foundation, this program is designed to provide emotional support to school-age children whose parent or grandparent has been diagnosed with cancer. It is a free, 6-week emotional support program held at the Pearlman Cancer Center. Please call Sonya Yeager, LCSW at 249-5444 for next class dates and to register.
Food For Your Soul – A spiritual encouragement group for current and former cancer patients held in the Pearlman Cancer Center Conference Room each Monday at 3 pm. Please call Chaplain Brian Sayre for more information at 259-4505.
