Greater Valdosta United Way Celebrates Moody Air Force Base as a Steady Pillar of Strength in South Georgia
Thursday, December 4th, 2025
The Greater Valdosta United Way proudly recognizes Moody Air Force Base (AFB) as a steadfast anchor in the South Georgia community. For decades, Moody’s airmen, civilian personnel, and families have played an essential role in shaping the economic, social, and civic fabric of our region.
South Georgia’s communities thrive because of the people who call this region home, families who work hard, contribute to the local workforce, and strengthen the neighborhoods around them. Among them are the dedicated military families from Moody AFB, who bring exceptional service, leadership, and community involvement to our 11-county region. Moody families volunteer in schools, support local nonprofits, engage in community events, and help drive the local economy, making the base an invaluable partner in South Georgia’s continued growth.
In recent years, South Georgia has faced significant economic pressure following back-to-back hurricanes that disrupted local businesses, strained household budgets, and slowed recovery efforts across multiple counties. Families who were already managing tight finances now face additional burdens, from property damage and increased insurance costs to lost wages and rising expenses. These storms have underscored how vital community partnerships are in times of uncertainty, and how essential it is to ensure that working families, including those connected to Moody AFB, have access to stable support systems as they rebuild and move forward.
While military life brings pride and purpose, it can also bring financial and personal challenges. Many families, both civilian and military, work full-time yet still find it difficult to keep pace with rising living costs, childcare needs, and unexpected expenses. GVUW remains committed to ensuring that every working household in our region has access to the support and stability they need to thrive.
Operation Warm Heart, a private, nonprofit fund run by Moody’s First Sergeants, stands as a model of compassion and readiness. It provides immediate, confidential assistance to airmen experiencing financial hardship, from essential household needs to unforeseen emergencies. The program reflects the deep culture of care within Moody’s ranks and the base’s long-standing commitment to looking after its own.
To help bolster this mission, the Greater Valdosta United Way is proud to announce a $10,000 contribution to Operation Warm Heart, ensuring airmen and their families continue to receive critical support in times of need.
This investment underscores United Way’s dedication to strengthening the community networks that lift up local families, reflect the values of South Georgia, and honor the service members who give so much to our nation.
“Operation Warm Heart serves as a glimmer of hope for Airmen during their darkest times, and with generous financial contributions like the one from Greater Valdosta United Way, First Sergeants will be able to provide life-changing assistance to Airmen in crisis,” said MSgt. Brandon Trollman, first sergeant, 71st Rescue Squadron.
“Moody Air Force Base is a true cornerstone of our region,” said Michael Smith, GVUW President and CEO. “Their unwavering presence, volunteerism, and service make South Georgia stronger. By partnering with programs like Operation Warm Heart, we’re reaffirming our commitment to supporting the families who help our communities thrive.”
