Wiregrass Georgia Technical College is proud to announce the publication of a new book by its own Vice President of Economic Development, Michael Williams, Jr. His latest work, Ocmulgee: History and Legacy, was published on November 4, 2024. This marks Williams’s second book on Georgia’s waterways, following his acclaimed debut Rivers, Rogues, and Timbermen (2015). The new book offers readers an in-depth look into the historic Ocmulgee River, tracing its influence from geologic origins through the lives of early Paleo-Americans, Native Americans, pioneers, and up to the present day.

To celebrate the launch, the Economic Development Department at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College will host a Wiregrass Ocmulgee History Series event at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, in the Dorminy-Mixon Hall auditorium on the Ben Hill-Irwin campus. During this event, Vice President Williams will discuss Ocmulgee: History and Legacy, share insights into the river’s remarkable history and explore the deep connections it fosters with Central and South Georgia. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase author-signed copies of the book, which would make a treasured addition to any local history collection.

Williams, who holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Georgia and an MA in English Literature from Valdosta State University, brings his literary expertise and passion for regional history to his writing. In addition to his work at Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, Williams spends much of his free time with his wife Mandy and daughters, Carlin, Joley, and Sarah Kate on the Ocmulgee River, which has inspired much of his work.

Wiregrass Georgia Technical College President DeAnnia Clements expressed enthusiasm for the book’s publication, stating, "Michael’s work reflects a deep respect and understanding of Georgia’s history and natural landscapes. We are excited to celebrate this achievement and look forward to sharing his knowledge with the community.”

The Wiregrass Ocmulgee History Series event is open to the public. Attendees can expect an engaging presentation and a chance to learn about the Ocmulgee River’s profound legacy.
