Friday, November 22nd, 2024

In response to the weather events that have impacted South Georgia over the last year and a half, the Greater Valdosta United Way (GVUW) has added disaster relief as one of its primary focus areas.

“We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from our community partners and donors,” said Michael Smith, president and CEO of Greater Valdosta United Way. “The need for disaster relief in our region is evident, and with the help of these partners, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of those who have been affected by these extreme weather events.”

The Outlaw State of Community Fund, TikTok, Verizon, FanDuel, Phillip Morris International, Georgia Power, Allstate, Southeastern Credit Union, Airbnb, Georgia Auto Dealer, and BankSouth are among the businesses supporting their disaster relief efforts.

In response to recent challenges, the organization has provided $16,366 in utility and rental assistance, $69,973 in regrants to Impact Partners and local nonprofits, and $15,000 in Walmart and Publix gift cards. Additionally, $5,700 was allocated to feed first responders, out-of-town disaster relief volunteers, and disaster-affected individuals.

“These funds allow us to provide much-needed emergency assistance to individuals and nonprofits in our community,” said GVUW Direct Services Coordinator, Korrelle Trollmann. “The case management load is overwhelming, but we are doing our best to assist with storm-related losses, avoid eviction and disruption of utilities, and connect people to additional resources for help.”

In addition to providing immediate relief, GVUW is investing in long-term disaster preparedness by purchasing generators for local nonprofits, with $4,860 spent to date. As a member of Georgia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD), GVUW is also contributing funds to support the local chapters’ mission of fostering collaboration between nonprofits and local government agencies during disaster response.

“We hope that our efforts enhance South Central Georgia COADs' long-term preparedness for local nonprofits, ensuring they remain operational during natural disasters and can continue serving communities in times of need,” Smith said.

As South Georgia continues to recover and prepare for the future, Greater Valdosta United Way remains committed to its mission of improving lives by mobilizing the caring power of the community. Through collaborative efforts and continued support, the organization will continue to focus on disaster relief, recovery, mental health, and preparedness in the region.
