Cancer Coalition to Honor James McGahee, for Inaugural Annual Night for Hope Gala

Staff Report From Valdosta CEO

Wednesday, January 7th, 2015

The Cancer Coalition of South Georgia is pleased to host its first annual Night for Hope fundraising gala on Saturday, February 7.  All proceeds from the event will stay in our area and be used to help local residents through the Cancer Coalition’s programs and services.

The elegant, formal celebration honors a local cancer survivor and includes a plated dinner, live and silent auctions, and live musical entertainment.  The event will be held in the Valdosta State University Student Union Ballroom beginning at 6:30 in the evening. The community is invited to support the local fight against cancer by attending the event, sponsoring or providing donated auction items or services.

“Night for Hope has become a much anticipated event in other communities and we are thrilled to now bring it to Lowndes County,” said Melissa Goodin, Development Manager. “Guests will have a delightful time while supporting an important cause.”

The 2015 Valdosta Night for Hope honoree is Mr. James McGahee, a longtime advocate for the community.  Through his own battle with cancer 30 years ago, McGahee realized the importance of having local cancer services and he built a stellar cancer program as CEO at South Georgia Medical Center. McGahee also is widely admired for his efforts with local businesses and the Chamber, Valdosta State University and local technical colleges, Moody Air Force Base, state and federal advocacy to support local interests, and many local charitable organizations.

McGahee is a founding member of the Cancer Coalition’s Board of Directors and served for ten years. He firmly believes in keeping Lowndes County resources in our local community so we can fight cancer for our residents, right here. With the community’s support, the Cancer Coalition will be able to honor James McGahee - and all those touched by cancer - by continuing its community-based prevention, screening and early detection, education and research in Lowndes County. Cancer Coalition CEO Diane Fletcher said, “We are excited to give Mr. McGahee the opportunity to share his passion for the Cancer Coalition’s local work.”

Cancer Coalition officials are seeking additional business and family sponsorships as well as auction donations.  Please contact Melissa at 229-312-1706. For tickets or more information, please call 229-312-1700 or visit www.sgacancer.org
