March 21st-22nd CareerExpo Connects Georgia Students with Careers in Construction Industries

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, March 21st, 2019

The Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) CareerExpo connects Georgia high school and college students with professionals in the building industry including contracting, energy, mining, and more.

When: March 21 - 22, 2019, March 21: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., March 22: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Where:  Georgia International Convention Center, 2000 Convention Center Concourse, Atlanta 30337

Who: More than 5,000 middle, high school and college students from across Georgia will have the opportunity to learn about careers in the building industry and speak with professionals from over 300 leading companies about jobs in the industry.

Special Guest: Kayleen McCabe, Host of DIY's "Rescue Renovation"

Why We Care: Georgia is facing a skills gap. The numbers show there are not enough craft labor workers to fill the demand. For every five people that retire from the trades, there is only one apprentice to fill the job.

At the Expo, students from across Georgia will have the opportunity to learn about careers in the building industry. They’ll practice all kinds of construction skills (think sawing, hammering, building, plumbing, etc.) and speak with professionals from over 300 leading companies about jobs that are in demand.

Visuals:

  • Local teacher, students, construction companies

  • Experience the sights, sounds and use the equipment of a real construction site.

  • Interactive displays allow students to see the scope of jobs in the industry and introduce them to specific career paths.

Also in attendance will be dozens of colleges and universities, all representing eight different career clusters: Architecture and Construction, Arts, A/V Technology and Communications, Energy, Government and Public Administration, Human Services, Law, Public Safety, Corrections & Security, Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM), and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics.

CEFGA CareerExpo 2019 will also feature the SkillsUSA State Championship, a competition that allows students to showcase their skills in a number of construction-related disciplines. Winners of the contest will go on to represent Georgia at SkillsUSA Nationals Championship.

Georgia public schools have more than 17,000 students enrolled in 150 skilled trade construction and metals programs throughout the state. The Construction Education Foundation of Georgia (CEFGA) was created by construction employers to meet the needs of the workforce.
