Senate Bill 331, sponsored by Sen. Steve Henson (D – Stone Mountain), received final passage in the General Assembly on Thursday, March 29. SB 331 would keep the information of individuals who claim lottery winnings greater than $250,000 confidential, if the winner requests to do so in writing.

“The lottery is such an important mechanism for our state to be able to fund vital services and programs, such as the HOPE Scholarship,” said Sen. Henson. “However, sometimes claiming lottery winnings can present a public safety risk, especially when the winnings are significant. This bill will help prevent lottery winners from being inundated with unsolicited scams and media inquiries. I appreciate members of the Senate and the House coming together to pass this bill and I look forward to it becoming law.”

Gov. Deal has 40 days after the end of the legislative session to sign or veto the bill. If no action is taken on the bill, it will still become law after the 40 day period. The bill would become effective immediately upon becoming law.
