Citizens, community leaders and state legislators cut the ribbon on Valdosta’s new gateway on N. Valdosta Road, on April 24, in observance of National Arbor Day and Georgia Cities Week.

The gateway project, initiated by Mayor John Gayle and a 2015 Mayor/City Council Goal, was funded in part by a $19,490 GATEway (Georgia Transportation Enhancement) Grant that the City of Valdosta received from the Georgia Department of Transportation.  The grant provides funding for community landscaping projects along state routes.

“I am proud of our Engineering Department staff for constructing this attractive and welcoming gateway into our beautiful community,” said City Manager Larry Hanson.  “The new gateway is a prototype for several gateway projects that the city hopes to accomplish in the future, as funding allows.”

City Manager Hanson also praised the late Jay Shaw, former State Representative and GDOT Board Member, whose efforts resulted in Valdosta being one of 43 communities awarded and one of only two communities who received the grant in GDOT District 4.

"This gateway creates a positive, visual experience for visitors and citizens traveling to and from our city," said Assistant Engineering Department Director Emily Davenport, whose crews constructed the project.  "It not only defines our city limits, it also fosters a sense of pride for those who call Valdosta ‘home’.”

Motorists entering the city limits are now greeted by beautiful signage and landscaping that includes 72 Encore Azaleas, 6 Standard Natchez Crape Myrtles, 8 Saucer Magnolias, 10 Nellie Stevens Hollies, 6 Myrtle Dahoon Hollies, and 120 Big Blue Liriope.  The signage which was originally budgeted for $25,000, was constructed in-house by the city's Engineering Department for less than $7,000.
