Chamber Kicks Off Centennial Tree Project

A groundbreaking to celebrate the planting of 50 Live Oak trees for the Chamber’s Centennial Tree Project took place on March 6 in the medians on St. Augustine Road south of the railroad tracks. An additional 50 trees will be planted during the winter of 2012.
Project chairman Carla Penny is spearheading all of the activities planned in 2012 to celebrate the Chamber’s 100th anniversary, including the Centennial Tree Project. “The Chamber is beginning our second 100 years of service with a huge initiative that will make a profound difference in our community for at least the next 100 years,” Penny told the group of Chamber members, tree sponsors, Valdosta Tree Commission representatives and honorees.
By the end of 2012, the Chamber will have planted 100 trees in our community’s gateways. Speaking on behalf of Benefactor Sponsor Georgia Power, which purchased the first 20 trees, Terri Lupo shared with the group, “Georgia Power believes in this community, and we want to help Valdosta-Lowndes County make the best possible impression on newcomers and visitors. This is a gateway from Valdosta Regional Airport to one of Valdosta’s major commercial areas, and it is a gateway to two of our industrial parks. How we look matters, and these beautiful trees help our community make a good first impression.”
The Chamber will continue to sell trees throughout the year. The cost is $500 per tree, which includes planting and maintenance of a tree approximately 2 ½ inches in diameter. “We encourage people to purchase trees in honor or memory of someone, or simply to be a part of this incredible community initiative,” Penny added.
